Pakistan EV charging stations roadmap highlighting 3,000 EV charging stations planned by 2030

Pakistan Plans to Install 3,000 EV Charging Stations by 2030

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has announced an ambitious national plan to install 3,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country by 2030, marking a major strategic push to support clean transportation and accelerate the shift toward electric mobility. The roadmap, part of the government’s broader electric mobility agenda, includes an initial rollout of 240 charging stations in the current fiscal year (2025–26).

According to an official government document shared with media, the ambitious deployment will be led through public-private partnerships, with private companies responsible for construction and operation of chargers, while regulatory and oversight functions will be coordinated by multiple government bodies including the Ministry of Industries and Production, the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), the Power Division, NEPRA, and distribution companies.

Since the introduction of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure (EVCI) and Battery Swapping Stations (BSS) Regulations in October 2024 under NEECA’s mandate, the federal government has already issued dozens of licences (over 70) for EV charging infrastructure, signalling growing private-sector interest in the deployment.

While Pakistan’s EV charging network remains limited – with infrastructure still concentrated in major urban centres – the 3,000-station target represents a significant commitment to overcoming “range anxiety” and creating a reliable nationwide grid for electric transport users. Officials said planning for highway corridor coverage and urban hubs is underway, though deployment hurdles remain, including grid connection delays, regulatory approvals, and coordination challenges among utilities.

Industry analysts note that expanding charging infrastructure is essential to support the government’s broader EV adoption goals under the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025–2030, which aims for a substantial shift toward EV use by the end of the decade.

Despite progress on policy and licensing, actual installation remains in early stages, with many planned sites yet to be operational. Continued coordination between regulators, private partners, and power distribution companies will be key to meeting the 2030 target and ensuring Pakistan’s electric vehicle ecosystem can grow sustainably.

Key Highlights
