Pakistan Reduces EV Charging Costs by 45% to Power Adoption Surge
Pakistan has taken a major step toward accelerating electric mobility by reducing EV charging costs by 45%, a move expected to significantly boost the country’s transition to cleaner transportation. Announced in Islamabad, the government has slashed electricity tariffs for EV charging station operators from 71.10 rupees to 39.70 rupees per unit, with the revised rates set to take effect within a month.
The decision comes as part of broader energy sector reforms aimed at addressing declining power consumption caused by ongoing economic challenges. With surplus electricity capacity and long-standing financial commitments to independent power producers, the government is now focusing on increasing demand through electrification – particularly in the transport sector.
Energy Minister Awais Leghari emphasized that reducing EV charging costs is a critical step toward making electric vehicles more accessible and attractive for both consumers and investors. The government is targeting an internal rate of return exceeding 20% for investors in EV infrastructure, signaling strong growth potential in the sector.
Pakistan’s EV push is especially focused on two- and three-wheelers, which dominate the country’s transport landscape. With over 30 million such vehicles consuming more than $5 billion in fuel annually, the government plans to convert 1 million units to electric in the initial phase. This transition is expected to save approximately $165 million in fuel import costs each year, while also reducing emissions.
Additionally, financing schemes for electric bikes and conversion programs for petrol-powered vehicles are in the pipeline. However, officials have noted that international support, including up to $10 billion in pledged green financing following the 2022 Pakistan floods, will play a crucial role in sustaining long-term EV adoption.
With global players like BYD entering the Pakistani market, the country is aligning itself with international electrification trends, where up to 50% of vehicle sales could be electrified by 2030.
